Digital Projectors - An Alternative To Big-Screen TV

If you like to experience sporting events, movies, and sitcoms in blockbuster-sized proportion then Digital Projectors are for you. However, there are a few things you need to know before you go out and buy one.

There are several different types of projector technologies to display images. The most popular are DLP (digital light processing) and LCD (liquid crystal display). There is a third type of display namely CRT (cathode ray tube) which is much more expensive at around $8,000, and as such are aimed at the top end of the market.

DLP projectors work completely differently than LCD projectors. The chip that is used DLP projectors uses a series of tiny mirrors, each one representing a pixel. Each pixel reacts to light from the projector’s lamp to create high-quality images that are then sent through the lens to the screen. The “top of the range” DLP projectors use three chips, one for red, one for blue and one for green. Less expensive models use one chip with a color wheel with red, green, blue and sometimes other color filters to create images. There is a downside to this type of model as a rainbow effect can sometimes occur.

An LCD projector works by passing light through LCD glass panels. One for each of the red, green and blue video signals. When the light passes through these panels, tiny pixels switch on and off to create the image. The resulting image is then projected through a lens to a large screen. These types of projectors are capable of producing high-definition TV-quality images. There is a downside to this type of technology which is called “screen door effect” and the pixels can be seen in a large viewing area.
